Warm greetings from the Federal Community Children’s Centre. We’re a non-profit, community based service which aims to create a happy, safe and stimulating environment for kids. We include a preschool and long day care service, for 20 children aged three to five, and an after school care service called Kidzone.
Our philosophy: The Federal Community Children’s Centre is committed to maintaining the period of childhood as a unique and valuable stage of life. We understand the value of early childhood education and its contribution to life long learning. We believe children’s individuality needs to be supported and their self-esteem, independence and imagination fostered in a safe, happy place. We aim to create a centre where friendships are formed and children are guided to communicate well and learn by example. We believe children need to be exposed to diverse social and educational experiences and the natural world, and that they learn through play. We also believe our children need to feel loved, parents need to feel welcome and our staff need to feel valued.

• Location: You can find us at Binna Burra Road, near the corner of Coorabell Rd, Federal (just a small walk from the Federal shop, through the park).

• Operating Hours: The preschool runs from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Kidzone runs after school until 6pm, Monday to Friday.

• History: Located on land traditionally owned by the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation, our preschool was established by community members after the Federal Public School closed in 1978. The premises was originally the old teacher’s residence and is now leased from Byron Council as a community children’s facility.

• Our staff: The Director is Marie Mathieson who’s been at the centre for six years and working in the early childhood field since 1988. She has an early childhood teaching degree from Macquarie University. Her trusty staff include Jennifer, who holds a diploma in Child Studies and has been working with kids for five years, and Suze, who has a Bachelor of Education and is currently studying the Diploma of Children’s Services. She has more than four years experience with kids. Liz Gander is our Kidzone Coordinator five days per week.

• How it works: Our Children’s Centre is set up as an association of parents so when you enrol your child, you are an official member of Federal Community Children’s Centre Inc. This enables you to view all management records of the centre, to participate in decision making and to vote at general meetings.  A management committee made up of parents/community members are nominated and then elected at the Annual General Meeting, and meet at least once a term to make decisions and formulate policies as needed. Being a community-based service, all our profits go back into the centre, and we consult with and respond to parents in the community regarding their childcare needs and through feedback about service provision.

• Fees: The FCCC is funded by the NSW Department of Community Services and parent fees subsidised by Child Care Benefit funded through the Department of Family Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

• Annual events: We regularly run fun family and fundraising events such as garage sales, film nights and an upcoming exhibition of the children’s art work.
